The Jefferson County Memorial Project is a grassroots coalition. We are currently composed of more than 35 community partners and a multi-racial, multi-faith, multi-sector, and multi-generational group of committed volunteers. Together, we will complete the four goals of JCMP: 1) Research the 30 documented racial terror victims and their descendants 2) Educate the public on the importance of this history 3) Place historical markers at lynching sites and retrieve our monument from the National Memorial for Peace and Justice and 4) Advocate for reform where racial injustice still exists today. It is our hope that our memorial retrieval will make a statement that Alabamians will confront our history and reconcile for a better future.

Shortly after the 2016 election, a group of women who were upset with the campaign’s rhetoric gathered and formed H.I.V.E. Alabama (Huddle, Inquire, Validate, Enact). Our group of over 500 women (& men!) is focused on educating ourselves on issues critical to our state in an effort to bring about positive, thoughtful, and intentional change. We strongly believe that deep down, we all want to talk to our neighbors about the things that matter most and find the common ground that makes us a community. When we listen to each other, we learn from each other.

We have worked with children in Shades Cahaba Elementary School, Riverchase Elementary School, and Pizitz Middle School using listening as a means to improve communication. Through these pilot experiences, we have developed a curriculum for children in grades K-8. Our methodology is similar to that of Dr. Maria Montessori. We seek to meet the children where they are and invite them on a journey into the world of listening through the creation of silence, exercises in paying attention, learning poetry, work of the hand, discussion, and interactive storytelling. Please contact us about bringing the listening project to your school.
